Over the past decade, Westall Secondary College has successfully participated in a range of environmental monitoring and space based projects with projects including PAA, GLOBE, EarthDial and CloudSat. Year 9 students have built an automatic, Internet-linked weather station to collect local weather data and constructed an EarthDial that mirrors smaller versions carried on the backs of the Mars mission rovers.

This session models what it will be like to teach a typical Science lesson in the near future. It will attempt to demonstrate effective integration of many of the most popular new teaching technologies into a new pedagogy of teaching with technology.
Many educators see videoconferencing as somehow being the universal 'top of the pedagogy pile' method for instructing students at a distance. Research and experience within Education Queensland via the Virtual Schooling Service and the I-Support project is showing quite clearly that this is not the case. Truly effective educational activites must provide opportunites for both synchronous and asynchronous activities if the students are to maintain the locus of power in achieving their educational outcomes.
