Digital World, Digital Pedagogy - Reframing the Learning Landscape

The term digital pedagogy is emerging as a way of thinking and enacting the distinctive nature of teaching and learning in contemporary times. This paper builds on existing research on the integration of information and communication technology (ICT) in teaching and learning and the work of the Queensland Department of Education Training and the Arts in establishing digital pedagogies as one of the five essential components of smart classrooms. Through a social constructivist and connectivism lens, the notion of digital pedagogies is explored and principles of effective practice proposed through first considering the attributes that students require in a digital world then followed by consideration of relevant policy contexts and guiding documents. Glimpses of digital pedagogies are highlighted through the principles of effective practices in contemporary learning spaces. This paper concludes that to better meet the needs of contemporary students, new ways of learning and working are preferable to adding ICT, or substituting new technology for old, to teaching strategies reflected in past schooling paradigms.
